Removal of organic, difficult-to-decompose micro-contaminants

Fourth stage wastewater treatment

Microplastics in water

Our specialists have been developing our own AOP photo-oxidation technology since 2016, with the involvement of ELTE, MTA and industrial partners. The solution is able to remove drug residues with high efficiency after biological purification, meeting professional and regulatory requirements.

The design of the fourth stage of purification requires the use of multi-stage technological solutions, which are always determined by the features of a particular facility and the requirements for discharged purified wastewater. The most commonly used technological elements during conceptualization and design are:

  • Chemical clarification and sedimentation
  • Biological cleaning
  • Evaporation
  • Ultrafiltration
  • Removal of micro-contaminants
  • Photo-oxidation technology for drug residues
  • Reverse osmosis
  • Complex disinfection

Measurements carried out at domestic metropolitan sewage treatment plants confirm the presence of drug residues. Based on these results, systems providing cleaning stage 4 are already being built at several sites. In the near future, the application of this solution is not only professionally justified, but also expected to be a legal obligation.

In any case, the choice of a suitable technological line is preceded by thorough measurements. Our specialists are trained to detect drug residues and other micro-contaminants at the microgram or nanogram level, which requires accurate sampling and sample preparation. Only on the basis of them it is possible to correctly determine and combine the necessary technological solutions.

As with all our activities, we undertake the 4th stage of cleaning completely: from conception and design to approval, construction, service maintenance and operator support — always with responsibility for results.
