At a collagen production facility, we were commissioned to redesign and expand the technological operation of the industrial wastewater treatment plant. The current production generates 1,500–1,800 m³/day of highly polluted, specific industrial wastewater containing animal hide and collagen residues; however, due to ongoing capacity expansions, a treatment capacity of 3,000 m³/day must be established. The strongly acidic wastewater, heavily contaminated with dissolved and emulsified collagen as well as suspended solids, is only partially treated by the existing pre-treatment system. The client’s objective is to meet the conditions required for discharge into surface waters.
In the first phase of the project—beyond design and permitting—we upgraded the preliminary mechanical treatment and the neutralisation technology. An automatic chemical dosing system was installed, replacing the former neutralising agent (calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)₂) with a sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution. In subsequent project phases, the efficiency of physico-chemical treatment will be further improved by installing a new flotation unit, followed—based on the evaluation of intermediate treatment performance data—by the implementation of a completely new biological treatment stage at a later stage.
