Sunwoda battery plant - wastewater treatment design

Location:
Nyíregyháza, Hungary
Year of construction:
2026
SUNWODA Electronic Co., Ltd., a privately founded Chinese company listed on the Chinese stock exchange since 2011 and on the Swiss stock exchange since 2022, and currently ranked 10th in the global battery manufacturing industry, is constructing its first European factory in Hungary, in the Southern Industrial Park of Nyíregyháza.
Due to the special composition of the wastewater generated by the automotive battery plant, on-site industrial pre-treatment became necessary before the wastewater could be discharged to the industrial park’s shared municipal wastewater treatment plant for further treatment.
Following a highly competitive tendering process, our company was awarded the contract for the conceptual design of the battery factory’s industrial wastewater treatment system, incorporating multi-stage and customized technological solutions.
As part of our work, we were required to identify and precisely quantify the potential risk that, even after multiple treatment stages, certain substances could remain in the treated wastewater which, if discharged into surface waters or groundwater, could pose an environmental risk.
During our risk assessment, we also had to consider new types of pollutants for which Hungary had not yet established regulatory limit values. Our task therefore included proposing limit values for specific substances discharged into receiving waters, with the objective of protecting aquatic ecosystems as well as ensuring the qualitative protection of drinking water resources.
