Koteks Viscofan

Koteks Viscofan commissioned us to overhaul and expand their industrial wastewater treatment process. The goal was to thoroughly treat highly acidic water contaminated with dissolved and emulsified collagen and suspended solids, and to make it suitable for discharge into surface water.

The client

Koteks Viscofan is a major manufacturing plant in Novi Sad, Serbia, specializing in collagen and synthetic casings for the meat industry. With nearly 60 years of history, the company became part of the global Viscofan Group in 2005.

What we did

At this collagen production plant, we were tasked with overhauling and expanding the industrial wastewater treatment process. Production currently generates 1,500–1,800 m3/day of heavily contaminated wastewater containing animal hide and collagen residues, but an ongoing plant expansion will require capacity to be scaled up to 3,000 m3/day. The existing pre-treatment system only partially treats this highly acidic water, which carries large amounts of dissolved and emulsified collagen and suspended solids. The client's requirement was to meet the conditions for discharge into surface water. In the project's first phase — beyond design and permitting — we upgraded the preliminary mechanical treatment and neutralization technology. We installed an automatic chemical dosing system, replacing the previous neutralizing agent, calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂), with a sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution.

Outcome

In the project's first phase — beyond design and permitting — we upgraded the preliminary mechanical treatment and neutralization technology. In the following phases, we'll increase the efficiency of physico-chemical treatment by installing new flotation equipment, after which a completely new biological treatment stage will be built based on the measurement results from the intermediate treatment phases.
