For fifteen years, the Szeged biogas plant has been producing energy without interruption. Water4All delivered the plant as general contractor, from permitting through construction to commissioning, and we have maintained the facility ever since.
A decade and a half of reliable operation
The real test of a biogas plant is not the day it is handed over, but the years that follow. For fifteen years, the Szeged plant has steadily processed by-products from local agriculture and turned them into electricity and heat.
The plant in numbers
- 10,000 Nm³/day biogas production capacity
- 1.2 MW combined heat and power (CHP) unit
- Around 17,000 tonnes of maize silage and 19,000 tonnes of pig slurry processed each year
- 7.39 GWh of electricity a year – enough for around 3,700 households
- 6.94 GWh of heat a year for the fermenters, nearby pig farms and a grain dryer
- Around 16,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions avoided each year
The digestate left after fermentation is used by local crop farms as a natural fertiliser substitute, closing the loop back on the fields.
One of the first plants with BiogInwa
The Szeged plant was one of the first to be equipped with our in-house BiogInwa biogas purification technology. The unit removes moisture, hydrogen sulphide and silicates from the raw biogas, protecting the gas engine and enabling high-efficiency energy generation over the long term. Fifteen years of uninterrupted operation are a testament to the technology's reliability.
